Hi C&S,

Thank you for your detailed report.
Install finishes
Good to hear that.
Invalid crypto engine
Please install MacGPG2 2.0.16 from http://www.gpgtools.org/macgpg2/index.html
The following install step failed: run postupgrade script for GPGMail-105. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
This seems to be an issue with 10.5 on PPC only (I'm in contact with the maintainer of the installer software we're using). Please note that nobody in our team uses 10.5 anymore - so support for Leopard is hard to archive. I'm running 10.5 in a virtual machine, but this way I can only test the 10.5/Intel support.

I got the impression that you've (some) developer skills - maybe you could consider helping us to maintain/enhance the 10.5 support?

Best regards, Alex

PS: Please do not send me private messages. Use our support contact or (in this case even better) our mailing lists.

Hi, please test https://github.com/downloads/GPGTools/GPGTools/GPGTools-20111120.dmg - Best regards, Alex
____________
Invalid crypto engine
GPGMail cannot work. It didn't find GnuPG (/usr/local/bin/gpg) with at least version 1.3.0. Please quit Mail, install a matching GnuPG version (for example from MacGPG Project, http://macgpg.sourceforge.net/), then restart Mail.
____________
1. Path does not exist: /usr/local/bin/gpg
symlink: gpg
(original: /usr/local/MacGPG2/bin/gpg2)
symlink: gpg-agent
(original: /usr/local/MacGPG2/bin/gpg-agent)
symlink: gpg2
(original: /usr/local/MacGPG2/bin/gpg2)
3. Path does not exist: /usr/local/MacGPG2
...Obviously MacGPG2 is not installed, and web site says MacGPG2 is INTEL only.
• Integrated MacGPG 2 (OS X 10.5 to 10.7, Intel).
• Integrated MacGPG 1 (OS X 10.5 to 10.7, Universal).

• So I assume MacGPG1 is for PowerPC.
• Tried to install MacGPG1 with this installer -- that did not work either

Please install MacGPG2 2.0.16 from http://www.gpgtools.org/macgpg2/index.html
Ok, it worked... but did not install the files in /usr/local/MacGPG2
the same way it did with MacGPG1

After the install succeeded, I realized that all of the other
applications in the tools suite are missing too. Nothing was
installed correctly. So maybe you should post a notice on the
download page which says the GPGtools installer is for INTEL ONLY
until the problem is resolved, with manual install instructions for
the PowerPC platform.

The following install step failed: run postupgrade script for
GPGMail-105. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
This seems to be an issue with 10.5 on PPC only (I'm in contact with
the maintainer of the installer software we're using). Please note
that nobody in our team uses 10.5 anymore - so support for Leopard
is hard to archive. I'm running 10.5 in a virtual machine, but this
way I can only test the 10.5/Intel support.
OK, I understand... but still trying to determine which command in the
install script returned a "wrong CPU" error. For some unknown reason,
I cannot reproduce the error now.
Post by Alex (via GPGTools)
I got the impression that you've (some) developer skills - maybe you
could consider helping us to maintain/enhance the 10.5 support?
I was initially confused because the web site gives the impression
that 10.5 support is already working:

Version 2011.11.17
17. November 2011
Requires OS X 10.5

http://www.gpgtools.org/installer/index.html

--But of course it only works on Intel. So the GPGtools installer is
broken: it should detect OS version & CPU type, then install the
correct version of each application. But the installer does not
appear to include the 10.5 / PPC versions of each app, or it does not
copy them to the correct path. There are no GPG tools in the
Applications folder (except "start-GPG-agent.")

I see now that PPC users on 10.5 just need to download & install these
3 applications:

GPG keychain access 0.8.13
GPGmail 1.2.0 (10.5)
MacGPG2 2.0.16

I did this and it seems that all is working fine now. I can generate
a key & Mail.app appears to function correctly.

_____

Could I fix the installer for PPC? Maybe. I can certainly verify
that changes to the installer function correctly, but it would take
more time for me to determine why the files were not copied to the
boot volume. (And the uninstaller does not work either.) Most of my
experience is on the Windows platform; I am not very familiar with Mac
OS scripting & developer tools. Also, the logic board recently
failed in my new Mac, 1 week after the warranty expired. I can't
afford to buy another one immediately. =(

PS: Please do not send me private messages. Use our support contact
or (in this case even better) our mailing lists.
OK, I was only following the instructions here:

"You can also get in touch with us via mail. Feel free to write to
the GPGTools Developer Team" [gpgtools-devel-***@public.gmane.org]

http://support.gpgtools.org/kb/faq/found-an-issue

I had no idea where this e-mail was going. I just wanted someone to
know the GPGtools installer is broken on the PowerPC platform. The
download page should clarify this because millions of PowerPC Macs are
still in use today. I even know people who are developing &
supporting apps for OS 9 / iMac / et cetera. (!)

I guess I don't particularly need encryption, but after reading this
article*, I realized it is a good security practice when using open Wi-
Fi hotspots and wondered why it has not become a standard feature in
popular e-mail clients. I have always been interested in usability
issues and wanted to see why the existing solutions are regarded as
too complex for the average user. So while I applaud your support of
open-source software, there are limits to my ability to help. I will
do what I can, but dont have much time to work on this right now if
the installer requires too many changes.

This is because moving the files to /usr/local/MacGPGX was one of the changes introduced in version 2.0.17. See http://www.gpgtools.org/macgpg2/index.html#releasenotes

I can only test 10.5/Intel myself and GPGMail, MacGPG2, and GKA get installed. But GPGMail, GKA, and MacGPG1 are compatible with 10.5/PPC and are included in the installer. I see two options:

1. Remove all PPC related binaries from the installer
2. Find someone who fixes the installer issues ( I updated the web page a bit: http://www.gpgtools.org/installer/index.html )

Where did you received a "wrong CPU" error again? The "postupgrade" error is something else.

It *should* (see above).
--But of course it only works on Intel.
Not "of course". All needed PPC binaries are included.
Seems so :/
it should detect OS version & CPU type, then install the correct version of each application.
It does/should. It checks for a lot of things (also the OS version and CPU type).
But the installer does not appear to include the 10.5 / PPC versions of each app, or it does not copy them to the correct path.
It does. Well, not of each app: we've only PPC binaries of MacGPG1, GPGMail and GPG Keychain Access.
There are no GPG tools in the Applications folder (except "start-GPG-agent.")
There is a misunderstanding. GPGTools is the name of our project. The only application is "GPG Keychain Access". Then we've "MacGPGX" (the GnuPG core), "GPGMail" (OS X Mail Bundle), "GPGServices" (OS X Service Menu), "GPGPreferences" (OS X Preference Pane).
GPG keychain access 0.8.13
GPGmail 1.2.0 (10.5)
MacGPG2 2.0.16
Have you also tested your setup by using MacGPG1? Maybe we should include MacGPG2 2.0.16 instead of MacGPG1 for PPC users...
I did this and it seems that all is working fine now. I can generate a key & Mail.app appears to function correctly.
Very good to hear that.
I can certainly verify that changes to the installer function correctly
Feedback is always welcome.
, but it would take more time for me to determine why the files were not copied to the boot volume.
This seems to be an issue of the installer application (Packages.app) we're using. I already wrote the developer.

Actually, you just wrote a private mail to my mail address last time in your response. But this is not important.
I just wanted someone to know the GPGtools installer is broken on the PowerPC platform.
Thank you!

Millions of PowerPC Macs but not a single user/developer helping us with the installer ;)
I realized it is a good security practice when using open Wi-Fi hotspots
Actually, for this use case I would suggest to use IMAPS/POPS/SMTPS (transport layer security) or even a VPN instead of OpenPGP.

Best regards, Alex

/usr/local/MacGPGX
/usr/local/MacGPG2
With "X" I meant "1" or "2". Of course /usr/local/MacGPGX or /usr/local/MacGPG2 does not exist on your system since you've installed version 2.0.16 that - as I stated above - does not use these directories.
Post by Alex (via GPGTools)
The old PPC version of MacGPG2 seems to be working. I think MacGPG1 works too.
Thats good.
Post by Alex (via GPGTools)
But these only worked after GPGmail 1.2.0 was downloaded & installed separately. Maybe the GPGtools installer copies the wrong version of GPGmail (or wrong mail bundle for 10.5? On Mac OS 10.5, "Software Update" does not upgrade Mail.app beyond version 3.6. So all 10.5 / PPC users have Mail 3.6, I think).
What exactly is the issue you're experiencing? E.g. if the wrong version get installed Mail will tell you that it just disabled an incompatible plugin.
Post by Alex (via GPGTools)
Maybe you could make a separate installer of GPGtools for PPC?
I just decided to remove PPC support completely in the next release since I personally can't maintain it and it gets too time consuming. If there is someone who wants to work on it: please do it - we would appreciate it.
Post by Alex (via GPGTools)

I realized this after I downloaded & installed 'GPG Keychain Access' separately. The GPGtools installer did not install 'GPG Keychain Access' in the Applications folder. And now I see the other applications in the tools suite are for Intel only.
The latest version does include the PPC version and should install it.

Yes, I finally realized there are no PPC versions of GPGservices / GPGpreferences so they would not appear on the PPC platform. But I think the GPGtools installer did not install the GnuPG binaries to the correct path, so the mail.bundle could not link to them. After I installed the following packages manually, everything works.
So this might be the best option for 10.5/PPC users - to run the different installers separately. Good to know that.
Post by Alex (via GPGTools)
1. mail bundle installed by GPGtools is not compatible with Mail 3.6
2. mail bundle installed by GPGtools does not point to correct path where MacGPG binaries reside
3. GPG engine / core files do not belong in /usr/local/bin
Since everything works for my 10.5.8 installation in a Virtual Machine, the main cause might be something different.
Post by Alex (via GPGTools)
Since everything seems to function properly when I manually install the 3 packages above, maybe those packages are the ones that should be included in the GPGtools installer.
They are. The GPGTools installer just includes the very same files the other installers have.
Post by Alex (via GPGTools)
I wish I had more time to troubleshoot the installer, but I can test future versions to confirm that files were copied to the correct path. It would help to see a list of which files belong in which path.
I think you already spent a lot of time. Thank you. I'll just add a hint to the Installer web page that states what to do if you're working on 10.5/PPC.

Best regards, Alex

But these only worked after GPGmail 1.2.0 was downloaded & installed separately. Maybe the GPGtools installer copies the wrong version of GPGmail (or wrong mail bundle for 10.5? On Mac OS 10.5, "Software Update" does not upgrade Mail.app beyond version 3.6. So all 10.5 / PPC users have Mail 3.6, I think).
What exactly is the issue you're experiencing? E.g. if the wrong version get installed Mail will tell you that it just disabled an incompatible plugin.

Maybe you could make a separate installer of GPGtools for PPC?
I just decided to remove PPC support completely in the next release since I personally can't maintain it and it gets too time consuming. If there is someone who wants to work on it: please do it - we would appreciate it.

(The uninstaller did not remove all files either, but that is a separate issue, not so important at this time).
Maybe you could consider to open tickets here so we can track and fix the different issues? http://gpgtools.lighthouseapp.com/dashboard

I realized this after I downloaded & installed 'GPG Keychain Access' separately. The GPGtools installer did not install 'GPG Keychain Access' in the Applications folder. And now I see the other applications in the tools suite are for Intel only.
The latest version does include the PPC version and should install it.
Post by Alex (via GPGTools)

Hi C&S,

I just want to let you know that this version[1] of the installer shouldn't hang and after running the uninstaller it should be possible to install all the packages again.

Best regards, Alex

This is because moving the files to /usr/local/MacGPGX was one of the changes introduced in version 2.0.17. See http://www.gpgtools.org/macgpg2/index.html#releasenotes

The old PPC version of MacGPG2 seems to be working. I think MacGPG1 works too.
Thats good.

I had no idea where this e-mail was going. I just wanted someone to know
the GPGtools installer is broken on the PowerPC platform. The download
page should clarify this because millions of PowerPC Macs are still in use
today.
Apologies; very little free time recently. This is primilarly directed at
the GPGTools devel team.

Now that GnuPG2 has the option to spawn gpg-agent on demand, we in theory
no longer need launchd support and no longer need the OSX release specific
workarounds. However, this needs to be tested so that we can confirm how
it interacts with existing software such as Enigmail which do "bad things"
like trying to start gpg-agent independently.

This could mean that a single PPC/i386 bundle could potentially cover all
OSX releases.

Unfortunately, x64 builds are presenting problems on systems that have
already used the i386 version as the byte alignment on the keychain files
are incompatible; they are not designed to be portable between machines or
architecture. I have run tests and the performance gain is minimal - in
the order of milliseconds. Consequently, rather than risk breaking
thousands of existing installs, I propose remaining with a 32-bit build for
now.

I haven't seen any minutes from the meeting, which I unfortunately missed.
Were the implications of dropping launchd discussed? I would like to have
a rearchitectured MacGPG2 available for testing by the end of the year. I
also propose moving away from a single source tree to one with separate
original source and patches; similar to the cAos build system that I used
previously.

Which brings me nicely on to... Do we have a preferred automated build
system? Or is it a case of writing make scripts / implementing shell
scripts?

Take care,

Ben

Not really, we've discussed the other packages instead.

Wonderful!

This is what I had in mind when I wrote this build script: https://github.com/GPGTools/MacGPG2/blob/master/build-script.newWithDownload.sh
Which brings me nicely on to... Do we have a preferred automated build system? Or is it a case of writing make scripts / implementing shell scripts?
There is a buildbot: https://github.com/GPGTools/GPGTools_Core/blob/master/scripts/gpgtoolsBuildbot.sh
But basically, "make deploy" should

1. checkout all needed sources (instead of downloading files (see script above) a references git repository should be defined),
2. apply the patches,
3. build the binaries,
4. create an installer,
5. move everything to a DMG and
6. upload this file to gihub.

We've already general shell scripts to automate steps 4 to 6 and specific scripts for all projects for step 1 to 3.

Best regards, Alex

This is what I had in mind
I started a new branch at [1]. It includes git submodules to the original sources. Maybe this could be a good starting point for the following workflow?

we would like to reproduce this issue. But I personally can't (using a 64bit version of MacGPG2 2.0.18 right now with my old 32bit keychain). What exactly is not working?
